Preparing for Disaster

Natural disasters and medical emergencies are sometimes

an unfortunate occurrence in the life of a celiac.

  

Preparing for a disaster can help reduce stress and maintain health.

Although hospital stays are not something most of us like to think about, it is likely that we will find ourselves in need of either emergency or major medical attention at some time in our lives.

Natural Disasters

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in conjunction with the American Red Cross and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has prepared a document, Preparing for Disaster, outlining a four step approach to disaster preparedness. Steps include: Get informed, Make a Plan, Assemble a Kit and Maintain your Plan and Kit.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has also published a general guide

Ready America: Prepare, Plan, Stay Informed

      

Using a three step program, Homeland Security advises:

  • Get a Kit—publications are downloadable from this area
  • Make a Plan—includes Family Emergency Plan downloadable forms
  • Be Informed—includes links to community and state agencies as well as specific information for a wide variety of emergency situations from
 
 

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has prepared several documents on dealing with natural disasters. All documents give practical suggestions for dealing with hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters both before and after they occur.

  • Prepare for Hurricanes and Floods: Advice from FDA includes sections on food, medicine, insulin, medical devices, vaccines and other biologics and taking care of pets.

As “Celiacs Helping Celiacs”, CSA will work with CSA Chapters in the region where and when disaster strikes. As an initial step, the CSA website page, Preparing for Disaster, is available for:  

  • Posting updates from those who have found safety
  • Coordinating contributions of gluten-free products from individuals and companies
  • Coordinating distribution of gluten-free products
