This is the international recognized symbol for ‘gluten-free.’ At this time, however, there is not a single definition of ‘gluten-free’ that is accepted world-wide.

December 2008 Published Research

CSA has compiled informational synopses of

published research concerning CD, DH and related conditions.

Items of interest from December 2008

  • Celiac disease noted in new IBS treatment guidelines. This month, the American Journal of Gastroenterology published An Evidence-Based Systematic Review on the Management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome,  The guidelines were developed by the American College of Gastroenterology Task Force on IBS (“IBS” irritable bowel disease).  The guidelines include recommendations for when to test IBS patients for celiac disease.  www.amjgastro.com
  • One more reason to stay gluten-free. Norwegian researchers reviewed European studies on celiac disease and related risk of cancer or early death.  They concluded celiac disease “is not an innocent [harmless] condition.  This strengthens the arguments for coeliac [celiac] patients to adhere to a gluten free diet.”  Brottveit M, Lundin KE.  Cancer risk in coeliac disease. Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen 2008; 20:2312-5
  • Celiac disease gene search.  Finnish researchers recently published a study  proposing a predisposing gene for coeliac [celiac] disease.  Koskienen LL, Einardottir E, Dukes E, et al.  Association study of theIL18RAP locus in three European populations with coeliac disease. Hum Mol Genet 2008, Dec 22 Epub ahead of print.
  • Common genetic cause for type 1 diabetes and celiac disease.  Researchers at the University of Cambridge conducted a large scale study on type 1diabetes and celiac disease. The researchers concluded “A genetic susceptibility to both type 1 diabetes and celiac disease shares common alleles. These data suggest that common biologic mechanisms, such as autoimmunity-related tissue damage and intolerance to dietary antigens, may be etiologic features of both diseases.” Symth DJ,  Plagnol V, Walker NM, et al. Shared and distinct genetic variants in type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. New Engl J Med 2008; 26: 2767
