This is the international recognized symbol for ‘gluten-free.’ At this time, however, there is not a single definition of ‘gluten-free’ that is accepted world-wide.

History of Camp Celiac

Camp Celiac was started in July of 2000 as a weekend sleep-away camp for children with Celiac Disease. That weekend, fifty-two children were in attendance. The camp was so successful that the children begged for more, and thus Camp Celiac developed into a five-day sleep away camp catering entirely to the needs of the gluten-free diet. Each year the camp grows in attendance with 171 campers and staff attending in 2009, making Camp Celiac the largest gluten-free camp of its kind in the United States. The children come from across the United States and abroad, having represented over 20 states, Israel, Sweden, Germany and Italy.

Camp Aldersgate

Camp Aldersgate, located in North Scituate, Rhode Island, is situated on 230 acres. This property includes a lake, waterfront cabins, dining hall, solar bath house, outhouses, latrines, retreat center (including great hall, two kitchens, and four lavatories with showers), and health lodge. Although an effort will be made to accommodate requests for friends bunking in the same living area, we cannot promise to meet these requests. Any such request must be made in writing at the time of registration for consideration. Campers are assigned living space by gender and age. Age groups are broken down by 7-9 year olds, 10-12 year olds, and 13-16 year olds.

The camp is closed to all other groups during our stay to allow for a gluten-free dining hall and atmosphere. Although a day camp is present during Camp Celiac, they utilize a different area of the camp and bring bag lunches, therefore eliminating the worry of cross-contamination of gluten containing and gluten-free foods.

Camp Celiac provides a full time, registered nurse who is licensed in the state of Rhode Island. The nurse handles all medical needs including medications. Emergency medical transportation is available within seven to ten minutes.
